Drinking Water
Most of us have the basics - enough food and clothing and a roof over our heads but somehow it’s not enough. Even if we have friends and family we thirst for more - something better, more satisfying, longer lasting. This isn’t surprising - God has made us for more than this life has to offer - as we see in the report that follows.
On one occasion Jesus sat down by a well in the heat of the day. When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus asked for a drink. The woman was surprised for Jews did not mix with Samaritans. Then Jesus spoke to her again saying, “If you knew about God’s gift - if you knew who is speaking to you - then you’d be the one doing the asking - and he’d be the one doing the giving - even giving you living water!”
“If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water”.
Living Water
The woman thought he meant the water in the well but Jesus went on to say....
”Everyone who drinks normal water will be thirsty again and again. But everyone who drinks the water I give will never be thirsty”.
Water is a precious resource and we can’t live without it. We need it for the land and we need
it for the body but it can never satisfy the thirst in our soul, no matter how much, how cold, how pure it is. There are 25 varieties of spring water on the market but none will do - not for this kind of thirst. Only the water Jesus gives can satisfy our soul-thirst. Jesus showed us the sort of water he meant when he went on to say,
“....The water that I give will be like a spring that gives eternal life”.
Knowing God
The water Jesus gives banishes our spiritual thirst forever - our thirst for God - to know God and become his friend and live forever in his presence. This thirst is met not by removing our desire but by pouring his Spirit into us. What could be better than that? Jesus satisfies our deepest thirst! No wonder Jesus said....
“If anyone is thirsty let him come to me
and drink”.
It’s the only way to drought-proof your soul.
As the Son of God Jesus came from God. He died on the cross and rose again. He returned to his Father in heaven to live forever. From there he gives people the Spirit of God so they can know God. This is the living water and he gives it to all those who believe in him.
There is nothing better than serving the true King Jesus. One of our favourite activities is introducing people to Jesus. Please contact us to enquire about ways you can explore Christianity.
